I feel their pain and yet . . .

The article is about the sense of loss older journalists have been experiencing as their industry shrinks.  No doubt true.  The pain is real. I see it in my industry.  Yet I see an underlying pity party, “Oh it is so bad that this happened, but worst because it happened to me!”  And somehow it is worse for the country because journalists are losing their jobs?  Please.  There are plenty of other outlets.

As Red Skelton said, give the public what it wants and it will show up for it.  Too often the public was given what it was supposed to want, or what was supposed to be good for it.  So the public is not showing up.
